Lesson 18- Tablets for Textbooks in Schools
"A tablet replacing an exercise book is not innovation, it's just a different way to make notes."Geoff Mulgan
CONTENT- Books are still the primary medium of instruction in most schools. But given that students become ‘addicted’ to computer games, educators begun to think that using computer games in the teaching- learning process would be effective. Based on studies, educational video gaming help students to have lasting memory recall and higher visual literacy. The use of tablets in public schools may be difficult because the cost of one tablet for one student is not within the budget capability of the government. Books have more durability compared to electronic gadgets, and technical expertise for learning software is not widely available. There are still some areas in which the classrooms and facilities are inadequate.
EXPERIENCE- We have not experienced using tablets as books in the classroom until now even though we are already in the digital world. But there are activities such as simulation game activities that we have engaged with. It is effective using simulation game activities as assessment tool of the students’ learning because we retained or still remember what we have done in the activity. Aside from enjoying the activity, we also learned from it.
REFLECTION- We know that a 1:1 ration of a tablet to a student is still unattainable given our country’s situation. So books are still used in the classrooms as main source of information and the teacher. But we must use computer- based activities because it is effective to use to assess student’s learning through games since they are interested when it is a game so we should apply or use it in Instruction.
APPLICATION- As future teachers, we should:
ü Use computer- based simulation games to assess student’s learning.
ü Specify the lessons in which that kind of assessment tool is effective.
