Lesson 14- The Software as an Educational Resource
“It is not about the technology; it’s about sharing knowledge and information, communicating efficiently, building learning communities and creating a culture of professionalism in schools. These are the key responsibilities of all educational leaders”. – Marion Ginapolis
CONTENT- There are two types of software; the system software, which is the operating system that is found inside the computer machines, and the application software which contains the system that commands particular tasks. This software may be a custom software that is made for specific tasks often by large corporations, or a commercial software for personal computers such as calculating numbers, drawing graphs. The Microsoft Windows is a layer that creates the way the computer should work. This provides user convenience, a new look, information center and plug and play. Windows put all communications activities, and configures the computer with additional components such as for sound and video. There are Instructional Software that can be used in Education system. These software could be visited on the Internet or can be bought from dealers or manufacturers. Teachers should learn to evaluate computer- based educational materials. The following are some guidelines. Teachers should be cautious in using computer- based instructional materials and ‘free’ internet materials, don’t be distracted with the attractive graphics, sound, an animations forgetting its Instructional worth, observe clarity in the explanations and illustrations of concepts and principles, maintain the accuracy, coherence, logic of information, and whether these materials are relevant and effective in attaining learning objectives.
EXPERIENCE- New models or products of laptop now also helps us because of its new features and programs. When we had research activities or when we research articles for our reports, we can download it in our gadgets such as in tablet or in a laptop. And sometimes, we also download video clips, games, applications, music or movies. These files are heavy because they are about megabytes in size, example is movies. But with the advent of modern technology, PCs or laptops had large amounts of storage or capacity so it is really helpful to us students because we often browse the internet for our lessons and download these files for us to have self- study of the topics. Last summer, in our Social Dimensions of Education subject, we had an activity in which we had interviewed a teacher about the dimensions of education and with the help of the laptop, even though the teacher is in other place, we are able to have an interview through skype.
REFLECTION- There are Instructional software that we can recommend to students for them to use or visit depending on the appropriateness of the software to the subject matter. But before recommending those Instructional software, we should test first whether those software does not contain malware or viruses that would damage the gadgets used by the students. We should also learn to evaluate first the content of the materials whether the contents are clear including its explanations, illustrations, its concepts and if the information given is clear and accurate. We should make sure that these Instructional software would help students build their knowledge and develop or enhance their skills.
APPLICATION- As future teachers, we should:
ü Be careful in choosing instructional software to be used by the students.
ü Follow the guidelines set in evaluating computer- based educational materials.
ü Remember that in evaluating these materials, we should not be distracted by the attractiveness of the material rather, we should focus on its appropriateness to our subject matter aand the clarity of the concepts, principles and information.
