Lesson 13- Cooperative Learning with the Computer
CONTENT- Cooperative learning is learning by small groups of students who work together in a common learning task. There are five elements of cooperative learning; the common goal, interdependence, interaction, individual accountability and social skills. Cooperative learning is advantageous because it encourages active learning, motivates students, increases academic performance and promotes literacy and language skills. It also enhances the personal and social development of the students. Cooperative learning with the use of computers has been established because based on recent studies, students that work with computers in groups interact with each other for mutual help and brainstorming as well as consolidation of their ideas. The components of cooperative learning includes assigning students to mixed- ability teams, establish positive interdependence, teaching cooperative social skills, insuring individual accountability and helping groups process information.
EXPERIENCE- Usually in our different subject areas, we are grouped and would be given tasks or activities. In this way we learn easily because of the different ideas given by each member. Also, we tend to know more about our classmates because when we are in a group and we had finished our activities, we would talk about ourselves and share something of what was happening with our lives. Aside from learning together our lesson, we were also able to have a bonding. Also in cooperative learning, just like for example in our Earth Science, we have a lot of activities. We’ve learned to be responsible for our task in that specific activity because we often share or distribute the tasks so that we would be able to finish the activity. Then we would share it to the group to distribute the knowledge we had and also for each member to have the necessary information in the said activity. Skills were developed in cooperative learning such as interpersonal skills because we deal with different people.
REFLECTION- In teaching- learning process, it does not mean that it is only the teachers who were the provider of information. So in cooperative learning, students become responsible for gathering information. Also, they would learn to socialize with their classmates. As teachers must facilitate their learning, we should guide them in order for them to arrive a correct answer or solution. In cooperative learning, we must be sure that the elements are present such as having a common goal, interdependence and interaction in the group, individual accountability and development of social skills. That is why we should facilitate them, we should be observant to them to determine whether they reall are cooperating and helping each other.
APPLICATION- As future teachers,we should:
ü Specify the lessons in which cooperative learning would be effective.
ü Facilitate the students and guide them for them to be oriented on what they should do.
ü Involve all the elements of cooperative learning for it to be effective and successful because each of the elements are necessary for the cooperative learning to take place.
