Lesson 12- Information Technology in Support of Student- centered Learning
CONTENT- There are really differences between the traditional classroom and SCL classroom. In traditional classrooms, there are passive learners, teachers usually sits in front, teacher is the only source of information and often, students get restless. As a comparison, in a SCL classroom, the learners are active, demonstrates interdependence and self- awareness, teacher acts as facilitator and information can be accessed through ICTs. In the new school classroom environment, the students are actively engaging in the teaching- learning process. They are given activities or tasks such as performing computer word processing for text or graph presentations, preparing power point presentations, searching for information in the internet, brainstorming on ideas, using multimedia, and others.
EXPERIENCE- With the trend of technology or the ICT, we’ve shifted to a student- centered learning classroom from the traditional one. In a SCL classroom, students use laptops or tablets and there are various activities. In our case, we are not really using gadgets in the classroom during discussion but the activities we did involves the use of technology and also we access additional information about our lesson through ICT. In our subject matter specifically in Information technology 21 and Educational Technology 1, we are taught on how to make powerpoint presentation. Through this, we are able to apply what we have learned in these subjects to other subject area specially that we do reporting method. We are able to integrate our knowledge to other fields of discipline.
REFLECTION- Students of this generation are like technology-oriented. So as future teachers, we must know that they are more into doing activities and got interested when technology is integrated or being applied in the teaching- learning process. It is important that we should adapt to them, we should use teaching strategies or we should employ teaching styles suitable for their interest. We should be the one to adapt to the changes. Since they are actively participating and that we want them to really learn, we should have more activities and let them explore the ICT through giving them task that is applicable in using ICT such as e- mailing their homeworks, making powerpoint presentation and others.
APPLICATION- As future teachers, we should:
ü Let them construct and produce multimedia projects that are appropriate and related to the subject area.
ü Give activities that is applicable to using ICT.
ü Employ reporting method in the class for them to integrate what they have learned in making powerpoint presentation.
ü Give them research activities to do for them to explore more in the ICT and also for them to construct their own ideas base on data gathered.
